Mr. Bungle, the beloved 80s experimental rock band has announced its first show in 20 years. The events will take place in February in three cities only, Los Angeles on February 7, San Francisco on February 8 and in New York City on February 10. Joining the band’s lineup will be Scott Ian of Anthrax, former Slayer (and current Suicidal Tendencies/Dead Cross) and drummer Dave Lombardo. Rounding out the lineup is mainstays Trevor Dunn on bass, Trey Spruance on guitar and the inimitable Mike Patton on vocals. Check out the announcement post from Ian below:

A post shared by Scott Ian (@scottianthrax) on

“To have Scott and Dave with us on this suicide mission is more than an honor,” Patton said “THEY are a big part of the reason we wrote this stuff in the first place, and to realize it 30-plus years later with these maestros is an absolute miracle … we can finally play this teenage nonsense correctly! A total catharsis for us.”

“I mean, are you kidding?? We WORSHIPPED those guys!” said Spruance. “And now they’re gonna PLAY in our band?”

Spruance elaborated on the inspiration to play the demo album on these limited tour dates. He spoke of practicing the album in preparation for the tour in the same city and house he’d written and recorded the album.

“Ever since Trevor hatched The Raging Wrath of the Easter Bunny v.2 idea a few years back, Patton, Lombardo, he and I had each been incubating some idea of that egg,” he said. “Lombardo called me one day and asked me to make some guitar demos so he could learn the songs. He had this generous idea to surprise the other guys with being totally ready to go with the tunes. It just so happened that I was in Eureka at the time. So, I found myself re-visiting all of those riffs in the same goddamned town and in the same goddamned house where I recorded all the original guitars on that demo 33 years earlier. There was something about actually physically working out the mania of those riffs again at DAVE LOMBARDO’S request, in that environment — it just split my head open. It wasn’t long before the train of destiny had picked up too much speed for any of us to jump off.”

The band will be playing their 1986 self-produced, self-released demo album The Raging Wrath of the Easter Bunny on the tour, which will find the band performing at the Fonda Theatre in Hollywood, the Warfield Theatre in San Francisco and Brooklyn Steel in Brooklyn, NY. Tickets go on sale August 16 at 10 AM.

UPDATE (8/15): Mr. Bungle has announced, due to overwhelming demand, that they’ll be playing an additional night at each of the venues of their previously-announced tour. The short tour has doubled from three to six days, all still taking place in Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York City.

You know what you WON’T be doing this Halloween? Trick or treating. Bummer.

But you know what you WILL be doing this Halloween? Enjoying Mr. Bungle’s The Night They Came Home!, which a press release describes as “a virtual live concert experience… [featuring] a performance from the current incarnation of Mr. Bungle: Mike Patton, Trevor Dunn, Trey Spruance, Scott Ian and Dave Lombardo.” Which is extra super-duper-special if you, like me, are one of the schmucky fans who didn’t get to see any of the band’s reunion shows earlier this year.

Not-coincidentally, the day before the performance, this same incarnation of Mr. Bungle will release their first new album in 21 years, The Raging Wrath of the Easter Bunny Demo, via vocalist Mike Patton’s own Ipecac Recordings. That release will feature a re-recording of the band’s super-rare 1986 demo, as well as some previously-unreleased songs, such as the recent single, “Eracist.” You can pre-order that bad boy right here.
