Wine is an implementation of the Windows APIs on top of X and Unix. Think of Wine as a Windows compatibility layer. Wine provides both a development toolkit (Winelib) for porting Windows sources to Unix and a program loader, allowing many unmodified Windows binaries to run under Intel Unixes. Wine works on most popular Intel Unixes, including Linux, FreeBSD, and Solaris.
Wine can run Microsoft Office, multimedia applications such as QuickTime and Windows Media Player, and even games such as Max Payne or Unreal Tournament 3.
Wine does not require Microsoft Windows, as it is a completely alternative implementation consisting of 100% Microsoft-free code, but it can optionally use native system DLLs if they are available. Wine comes with complete sources, documentation and examples and is freely redistributable.

There seems to be a version descriptivism in Wine, where later versions do not work with MS Windows based application software, such as AutoCAD Release 14, doesn't work anymore with later versions of Wine. Why is this? David
David I don't know why this is but you might try going to the WineHQ website and reporting it. They used to ask people to notify them when programs that worked on old releases didn't work on newer ones. I think its the way with software though. There are games on dotdeb.com that worked on older linuxes but not on newer ones.
